We live in a society where more is better and never enough. It’s all about the latest and the greatest – being the first to post about what’s new or show off what we’ve received from companies. Let’s be honest, those of us who are active in the blogging / social media beauty community are very familiar with this. I’m not going to deny it – I made this my priority for a VERY long time. Then I woke up and realised – I have a hoarder mentality and I’m NOT ok with that.
Let’s start with the definition of a hoarder. According to the Cambridge Dictionary a hoarder is ‘a person or organisation that collects a lot of money or objects; sometimes secretly’. Ok, so not very groundbreaking but it’s definitely something that I can call myself. Now, I’m not saying that I have a hoarding disorder or anything like that – but over the last couple of years beauty blogging has led me to compile a (shamefully) large amount of products that I just did not need.
I got to a point where I started lusting for products and the attention I got when posting on social media. I would ensure I bought the latest of EVERYTHING makeup related and post on social media / youtube to achieve the likes and comments. I became obsessed with and infatuated with all things makeup related to the extent that I would spend my money to the point of having nothing left at the end of the month – and what for? So that people can like a few pictures, or increase my subscriber number or become Instagram famous so beauty brands can ‘discover’ me. I became a hoarder without even realising it.
About a year ago I started to realise that I could not live my life like this anymore – something needed to change. I started to box up my makeup and give a LOT away. I wish I had kept pictures of all of the makeup I gave away because I’m sure I’ve given away at least 10 big boxes and bags (you know the big cheap chequered washer bags!) of products. Initially I was actually deceiving myself. I kept thinking that by giving away my makeup I was dealing with hoarding mentality – when in actual fact I was still buying more! It was not until a few months ago that I actually started to deal with the issue. I needed to stop lusting after the products and buying them.
This brings me to this current day. I’m on a massive clear out mission and a ‘no buy unless I’m replacing’ mentality. I actually feel sick when I look at my collection and my bank balance and how much damage I’ve done to my financial situation – all because of my habitual spending habits. My interest in social media fame and approval has almost completely gone. I say ‘almost’ because I still struggle from time to time with thinking that I need approval from others (something I may write about one day). I’ve just turned 30, I’m getting married, I’m a homeowner, my finances are far from healthy and I’m heading for a career change – I’ve woken up to reality and faced the facts that frivalous spending is a hindrance and not a success.
Please do not get me wrong – if you love spending your money on makeup -you do you! I still love to buy makeup. My point is that having a hoarding mentality made me go from a makeup lover to an attention seeker who wanted approval from all avenues. It also lead me to developing a very unhealthy relationship with money which I am now trying to heal.
I know I still have a long way to go, but I almost feel liberated knowing that I’m no longer obsessing over the latest releases or how I’m going to ensure my bank funds will stretch to cover my new purchases. I also feel peace knowing that I’m no longer racing to post the first pics of a new release, or counting my likes or follower numbers on a social media post. To be honest all of this has led me to step outside of the beauty community and expand my focus and interests.
